The Biewer originated in Germany in 1984 resulting from a piebald genetic recessive gene occurrence produced by Gertrud and Werner Biewer's purebred Yorkshire Terriers. The sire and dam of the first recognized Biewer's were "Darling von Friedheck" and "Fru Fru von Friedheck" pictured above.  All true Biewers are descendants of this original pairing. The Biewer's began selectively breeding to these black, white and gold coloration and markings. The Biewer's named these little dogs with their white markings "Biewer Yorkshire a la Pom Pon". There is a story to the naming of ‘a la Pom Pon’, a famous European singer and a presentation of a gift puppy at a fancy European restaurant where the tag ‘a la Pom Pon’ supposedly originated. The Biewer Yorkshire is bred, registered and shown in many countries around the world and is increasing in popularity across the United States. Few registries in the United States have acknowledged the Biewer Yorkshire as a breed at this time.  The Biewer line originated from 2 Yorkshire Terriers.   Some breeders have tried to match the appearance of the Biewer by crossing the Yorkshire Terrier and the Shih-Tzu. The crossing will produce the parti/piebald/white markings from the Shih-Tzu influence after the second generation but these dogs are not true Biewers, rather they are a mixed breed.   Other breeders produce what they call a ‘party colored yorkie’, and these dogs are not true Biewers.  A true Biewer will have been produced from the breeding of two purebred registered Biewers, decendents of the original von Friedheck line.   For a complete history of the Yorkshire Terrier, the predecessor to all Biewers, click here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yorkshire_Terrier
